One woman was NOT killed and three others (including a 4 yr old girl) were NOT injured in a shooting that DIDN'T happen.

See, the shooting didn't happen, because the Southern Union State Community College Student Code of Conduct, page 281, clearly states

The following are prohibited and apply to all College property including residence halls and off-campus activities.
...
23. Use, possession, sale or distribution of weapons or firearms (including pellet guns and air rifles), ammunition, fireworks, and incendiary or any type of explosive device or material.

We can all be happy that because of the college's no-gun policy, this incident didn't happen outside an academic building right after the victims had just pulled up in a car.

Good thing they had that policy in place, otherwise someone might have brought a gun onto campus and shot folks.TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-81589101915534759872011-01-16T17:57:00.000-07:002011-01-16T17:57:37.850-07:00Rudyard RocksWhen the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail,
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

When Nag, the wayside cobra, hears the careless foot of man,
He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can,
But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail -
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws -
'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale -
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

Man's timid heart is bursting with the things he must not say,
For the Woman that God gave him isn't his to give away;
But when hunter meets with husband, each confirms the others tale -
The female of the species is more deadly than the male.

Man, a bear in most relations, worm and savage otherwise,
Man propounds negotiations, Man accepts the compromise;
Very rarely will he squarely push the logic of a fact
To its ultimate conclusion in unmitigated act.

Fear, or foolishness, impels him, ere he lay the wicked low,
To concede some form of trial even to his fiercest foe.
Mirth obscene diverts his anger; Doubt and Pity oft perplex
Him in dealing with an issue - to the scandal of the Sex!

But the Woman that God gave him, every fibre of her frame
Proves her launched for one sole issue, armed and engined for the same,
And to serve that single issue, lest the generations fail,
The female of the species must be deadlier than the male.

She who faces Death by torture for each life beneath her breast
May not deal in doubt or pity - must not swerve for fact or jest.
These be purely male diversions - not in these her honor dwells -
She, the Other Law we live by, is that Law and nothing else!

She can bring no more to living than the powers that make her great
As the Mother of the Infant and the Mistress of the Mate;
And when Babe and Man are lacking and she strides unclaimed to claim
Her right as femme (and baron), her equipment is the same.

She is wedded to convictions - in default of grosser ties;
Her contentions are her children, Heaven help him, who denies!
He will meet no cool discussion, but the instant, white-hot wild
Wakened female of the species warring as for spouse and child.

Unprovoked and awful charges - even so the she-bear fights;
Speech that drips, corrodes and poisons - even so the cobra bites;
Scientific vivisection of one nerve till it is raw,
And the victim writhes with anguish - like the Jesuit with the squaw!

So it comes that Man, the coward, when he gathers to confer
With his fellow-braves in council, dare not leave a place for her
Where, at war with Life and Conscience, he uplifts his erring hands
To some God of abstract justice - which no woman understands.

And Man knows it! Knows, moreover, that the Woman that God gave him
Must command but may not govern; shall enthrall but not enslave him.
And She knows, because She warns him and Her instincts never fail,
That the female of Her species is more deadly than the male!
He DIDN'T fire three times towards a church, and he DIDN'T fire three more times in the air. Police DIDN'T have to chase him off the street into the Perry-Castaneda Library, where he DIDN'T shoot himself to death.

You see, none of these things happened, because UT Austin has a no firearms policy.

The following weapons are prohibited:
Firearms
Explosive weapons
Machine guns
Short-barreled firearms
Firearm silencer
Switchblade knifes
Knuckles
Armor-piercing ammunition
Chemical dispensing devices
Zip gun
Club or night stick,
Illegal knives

I dunno - maybe Colton got confused that they mentioned both firearms and machine guns - perhaps an assault rifle is neither, and therefore allowed? Maybe he figured his ammunition was ok because it wasn't armor piercing.

Surely, Colton never ever ever would have violated law or school policy. That's why we have laws and policies, right?TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-10802989711168297732010-09-17T16:09:00.008-06:002010-09-29T16:11:43.363-06:00Stuff to do during General Conference weekendYes sisters, it's here again. The semi-annual LDS event where we extend a hand of fellowship to the 7th day Adventists by going to church on Saturday as well as Sunday. It's a great time to mark the changing seasons, prep for winter, and get into family squabbles. Come on then, this only happens once every six months! Get a move on!

My checklist includes:

* Hook internet up to comm system, blast lds.org over speakers.

* Grab Bug-out-bags, Get-home-bag, Stay-put-bag, and other such kits. Dump contents out on living room floor. Engage in traditional orgy of eating all the perishables. Get new perishables. Pack everything back up.

* Sharpen all knives, test all batteries, dump & fill drinking water cistern.

* Rotate or sta-bil gas and diesel storage. Check kerosene and propane storage. Locate and check seals on buried hoard.

* Test GetOutOfDodge plan after Sat session: April conference: retreat 1. October conference: backup retreat.

* After the talk on family togetherness, argue about getting along.

* Inventory food storage. Berate husband for not cooking more. Make husband clean up broken bottle of cannery salsa accidentally thrown at his stupid fat head.

* Vaccum LP/OP.

* Demand budget from husband to wallpaper gun room with that pink floral pattern I saw at Lowes.

* Switch landmines from summer-soil triggers to winter-soil triggers.

* Sit on the front porch during sessions and play the gunowner's version of the drinking game.

- Shoot target every time you hear "brothers and sisters", "endure", and "pornography".
- Empty clip vigorously every time a female voice says "precious", "virtuous", "lives of meaning and fulfilment", or "backrub".
- Swear loudly every time a female voice says "support", "encourage", "husband", or "his needs".
- Go full auto when you hear "debt", "self-reliance", "safe home environment", "defend against", or any mention of armed conflict.
- In the unlikely event they pull out the Brigham Young quotes about sending the enemy to hell cross-lots or women carrying a gun, or that Joseph Smith quote about people not defending their families being cowards and bastards, you can toss a grenade or fire the bazooka.
TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-55274434742225772672010-07-21T15:25:00.000-06:002010-07-21T15:28:09.856-06:00The guy at ToothpasteForDinner is a genius.

TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-9802989097305708052010-06-03T07:05:00.000-06:002010-06-03T07:17:56.717-06:00Kindred spiritTheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-89489805124268080182010-05-25T16:08:00.000-06:002010-05-25T16:17:04.809-06:00Sacrament meeting talk"There's no way you'll be able to kill all those dandilions," my idiot hubby said. I don't think I've laughed so hard in years. By far, the best Earth Day ever, hands down. The kids and I made Daddy clean the sludge out of the septic tank, while we watched (from upwind of course). Looked like he was enjoyin' himself too much, so I had the oldest sneak up and push him in. Those things are deep!

Great accoustics though. I told him he had to put on a pink tutu and sing "I'm a little teapot" and do the moves before I got the ladder. Then it looked like it was going to snow, so I put the cement cap on and told him it was to protect him from the blizzard. I figured he'd like that - he's wanted a storm cellar for years.

Then the kids and I headed in for some proper Earth Day coloring projects:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig6M0odoNafrYglnVlApJ3754pdbUS5vgVhCHPywfa6fVgFuRAOTRKbs7cIWxeZXtoM5bEBtYJiQylU6XmPpmEiwt-4NhL5lKuEzF5F7gdshJQ0RA_1QYFGgjHFT0NMtArj4_Jw9EsrT1V/s320/urban-sprawl-florida.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464456858262042882" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 215px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVcJW0UFAeTLDll2a3TXlx9QFOWQqv6jvTbGfJwOkfxGCatV-fmhAc-fe1YlvGb4qwZhdfDI0TtYB-S332Cx_O0j7aQx7hp25axJbjpq6GW6iitJzHKnHX-mqrWaILT6V9qDcR0t-ZJwTx/s320/craftsman-chainsaw-35020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464456855703268258" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibINYETk_zSFMMPdnt5nP5uLoXwrp_1QYEei8WMS1C3lbzkNLd6kZaTJ8IpgFX7b6QtE8u5qkwSFcxRBSFS6OE0kvrcu3zG2Gjyz1bUhpYG3VluKJyOaF3EXJUIptOnwrM83nzINxekLuM/s320/bingham.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464456843481816930" />
Now THAT'S Homeschoolin'!

(Oh - since it's Monday and Earth Day was last Thursday, guess I better let hubby out. Items covered by this policy include, but are not limited to the following:

Guns and firearms of all types

Sure is a good thing they had that policy in place! Otherwise someone might get hurt!

But anyway, if someone actually decided to [gasp] violate this policy and bring a gun on campus, Ohio State's "Dealing with Disruptive and Distressed Individuals" policy should handle things just fine:

How should I deal with a disruptive person?

Disruptive behavior should not be ignored. Remain calm. Remind yourself that it is not about you, it is about the situation. Tell the individual that such behavior is inappropriate. Inform the individual that there are consequences for failing to improve the disruptive behavior. Many disruptive situations involve anger. Recognize that the period of peak anger usually lasts 20-30 seconds.

Although this may feel like an eternity in the throes of the situation, often it is best to “wait it out” before progressing. Remember to keep your supervisor or department chair apprised.

TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-63234126411618500212010-01-21T08:50:00.001-07:002010-03-23T10:58:25.786-06:00Girl ScoutsIt took forever to find a like-minded troop in the area, but patience is a virtue. So forgive me if I pass on the next decade's worth of MJ's heirs suing each other, book deals from those who knew him best, fictionalized bios, unauthorized bios, authorized bios, "where are they now" stories of his neverland kids, and social commentary from every angle wrapped up as a story about MJ. (Yes, I realize this post is an example of that last one. Bite me.)

I guess I should be glad that MJ will steal some of Elvis' thunder in the sightings and cheap artwork departments. But his litigious heirs and designates have a hundred years of learning on how to cash in, so we're gonna get re-deluged with MJ pink flannel nightwear, tacky battery powered dancing Santas who shake their booties to Billie Jean, counter-culture anti-MJ comic books, and Thriller brand Haloween makeup. Drop the Grace and add the Never - heck, it better fits the worldview anyway. The world is just too full of people. Free cars!I thought it was real nice, GM becoming more diverse and culturally inclusive by making a Kenyan their CEO. I didn't know Kenya knew anything about making cars, but apparently this guy has studied abroad, or something. Anyway, he ought to be open to ideas on what kind of cars to make, so here goes:

* Since GM has an Enterprise Value of 43 billion, and carries 54 billion in debt, our little family's share of ownership is roughly 700 bucks in the hole. Therefore, whatever car they end up foisting on us, should come with a $700 check just to make it a square deal.

* The new car should come with it's own federal legislation making it illegal to operate if you are not armed. That way, there'll be less people in my way as I haul the rugrats from activity to activity.

* It should come in pink.

* It should run on change.

.TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4406713425936898759.post-74131110748064587902009-05-14T15:47:00.000-06:002009-06-01T11:58:27.741-06:00Queen of the Doomer memeSome folks like to talk about EMP bursts, pandemic quarantines, economic collapses, global famine, food rioters, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, relatives coming to visit, civil war, or any other natural or manmade disaster that results in the rapid and massive breakdown of social order. Call 'em SHTF scenarios or TEOTWAWKI or whatever you want, they're all the same as a Zombie uprising to me. Just another dang reason for people to show up on my doorstep and annoy me.

Look people, I don't care if you're on fire. I don't care if Obama won a 2nd term and half the states are seceding and the other half are declaring martial law. And since hubby doesn't have much of a sense of smell anyway, this one isn't much of an issue.

Needle marks or bruises on lower arm, legs or bottom of feet.
This is stupid. Yes, hubby keeps piercing his tootsies when walking around the house in his socks. But that's because we don't clean, not because I'm addicted to yarn.

Car accidents, fender benders, household accidents.
Shut up. It ain't my fault if people don't give me a wide berth after they see me knitting at the red light.

Changes in friends: new hang-outs, avoidance of old crowd, new friends are drug users.
Hah - I got this one beat. The new friends aren't knitters when I first meet them - it takes them a while to be trained.

Change in activities; loss of interest in things that were important before.
Hah - I win another one. I wouldn't be much of a knitter if I hadn't figured out how to knit:
At church, homeschool co-op, doctors offices, and while doing stuff on the computer.
At friend's houses, while playing games, in the line at the DMV, at movies.
While shopping, in the check out line, while cooking, while eating at home, while eating out.
In Airport shuttles and Taxis, moving airport walkways, planes, trains, a paddlewheel boat, the Zoo tram, and of course in cars (either as a driver or a passenger).

The activities haven't changed - just the experience enhanced.

Drop in school or work performance; skips or is late to school or work.
Got another one beat! Don't work outside the home, don't go to school.

Changes in habits at home; loss of interest in family and family activities.
If one never had much interest in one's hubby in the first place, one can hardly blame one for not increasing one's interest in one's hubby just because one has harkened to the sweet, sweet call of the yarn ball.

Difficulty in paying attention; forgetfulness.
(knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, knit, kn-) What? Why am I sitting here at this computer typing crap? And where did my other yarn project go?

Lack of motivation, energy, self-esteem, discipline. Bored, "I don't care" attitude.
Meh. If I felt like getting up, I'd come over there and [falls asleep].

Violent temper or bizarre behavior.
Defensiveness, temper tantrums, resentful behavior (everything's a hassle).
Anyone who knows me, knows I never come within a mile of these unrefined issues.

Unexplained silliness or giddiness.
Unexplained moodiness, irritability, or nervousness.
Wait - is this a quiz about drugs, yarn, or bein' a chick?

Excessive need for privacy; keeps door locked or closed, won't let people in.
As I keep telling my visiting teacher - just scan the obits and if you don't see me there, I'm good.

Paranoia -- suspiciousness.
Hang on a sec - there's a car coming up the road. I'm gonna go shoot at it.

Secretive or suspicious behavior.
Couldn't get a clean shot, and the car got away. We're moving.

Chronic dishonesty; trouble with police.
Sorry, my 'community relations' with da po-po's always been this way, even before yarn. (Got no reason to lie about it.)

Unexplained need for money; can't explain where money goes; stealing.
I fully explain what the money's for and where it goes. It goes into bins and closets full of yarn and stuff.

Unusual effort to cover arms, legs.
Oh, now this is just a cheap shot. One can only knit so many hats.

Change in personal grooming habits.
Hey, if daddy can sit at work and scratch his rear end with a pen, why do I take flak for doing it with a sock needle?

Possession of drug paraphernalia.
Only enough for my needs. Besides, you wouldn't begrudge a little old lady her needles, crochet hooks, looms, sweater machines, sock machines, drum carders, spinning wheels, and niddy-noddies, would you? (Stupid hubby won't let us get cahsmere goats.)

So, there you go. Obviously no problem at all.

.TheObiBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12889431073164274529noreply@blogger.com1
